Pieter de Jager — chef and creative. Now heads up PDJ Collective with his wife, Christine.

Pieter spent 20+ years cooking in professional kitchens and travelling to over 20 countries along the way. Back in 2015, he couldn't find anyone to make bespoke wooden boards for his kitchen, so he made his own — in their single garage in Welgevonden, Stellenbosch.

The sawdust got a bit much for home life, so the boards moved to a rented shed on a farm outside Stellenbosch. Meanwhile, the garage became a little sewing studio, turning out aprons and knife bags for chef friends who've since gone on to run their own kitchens.

Things grew from there. Christine left her corporate job to sell the products full-time while raising their son, Daniel, and a few years later Pieter swapped the kitchen for the business too. They've since grown into a factory in Stikland Industrial and subsequently also opened an everyday eatery nearby, together employing more than 25 people.

The PDJ team have tailored their manufacturing to strike the perfect balance between bespoke craft orders and bulk production, for the hospitality and corporate industry as well as the B2C market.

Giving the small details time to shine, and making the soft touch points something to notice.

It's been a journey of faith, family and hard work, and they're grateful to be doing what they love.
